The Story Of The Windows

In 1910 a dedicated group of Jewish pioneers built the first Jewish house of worship in the frontier southwest.
The small Temple was graced with stained-glass windows that reflected the heritage of the first synagogue in the Arizona Territory. Regretfully the original windows were removed and lost when the congregation moved to a new building in 1949.
A ten year search to find the windows or the original design has not been successful. The only rendering found of the original windows is a watercolor postcard produced in 1914, Click here to view a copy of this postcard.
Experts in early 20th century houses of worship design have replicated the outline of the windows found on the postcard and designed the windows for the renovated Temple .
The windows installed in September of 2006 complete ten years of loving restoration of this Tucson treasure.
Once again the windows announce to the community the proud heritage of those original Jewish pioneers.
The windows were made possible by donations from Dr. and Mrs. Barry Friedman, Mrs. Brina Grusin, Mrs. Diana Hadley, Mr. and Mrs. Foster Kivel, Ms. Catherene Morton, Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Roland, and Mr. and Mrs. Mel Zuckerman, The windows were expertly constructed by Tucson Stained-glass artisan Greg Schoon at www.gregschoonfineart.com .
